USPA NEWS - As the engines started up on US Airways Flight 1939 on Friday, the long history book of US Airways was at last completed. This flight was the final flight to be flown using the name "US Airways," bringing the company's nearly 76 year history to an end.
Beginnings
US Airways was founded in 1937 under the name "All American Aviation (Inc.)." It was founded by Dr. Lytle Schooler Adams that year (1937), but did not officially begin service until the year 1939. Originally based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Adams was their first President, serving from 1937 until 1938. In 1938, two members of the well-known du Pont Family, Richard C. du Pont and Alexis Felix du Pont, Jr., purchased stocks for the company, and, according to Wikipedia, "...were able to acquire majority stock and voted Richard du Pont as new President."

In the next eleven years, All American Aviation was certified by the Civil Aeronautics Board for "...regular passenger, mail and express service."
Name Changes
In the year 1949, eleven years after All American Aviation began service, the company changed the name to "All American Airways." Over the next 47 years, the name changed a total of three times. In 1952, the name was changed to "Allegheny Airlines," and remained that way until 1979, when the name was changed to "USAir." 17 years later, the name was changed to the name "US Airways," in 1996, where it operated under that name for 19 years, until Friday, October 16, 2015.
